Default Geared up

A recent shot from the American Thread Mill in Willimantic, CT.

Some of the old machinery remains in place as this building is transformed into an artist's studio and residence faciity. This a gear on top of an old turbine chamber. As water passed through the turbine, it turned this gear, which was lnked to some overhead shafts which, through a series of belts, gears and shafts, transferred power from the river to the thread machines.

Here is what is left of the turbine.

Great shots Jim. I bet they had the young "grease monkeys" at that company also When I worked at Ensign Bickford, they ran most of there stuff on the overhead pulleys and belts. can't have electric motors in the same room as explosives

Marie I remember those gears, beautiful shots than and still beautiful today

I hope they had some protection around those pulleys and belts at EB. I often wonder how many arms got ripped off by those things. I remember seeing a full size, 19th century industrial shop set up at the Smithsonian years ago. Pre-OSHA

The building I am in in Hartford was the original Jacobs Chuck factory, built in 1915, and had those things all over the place. Some of them are still there. I've got to go around and shoot them while they are still there.

I remembered that you would remember them very well as I was posting them Sandy

I knew you loved them too and I nearly mentioned your name at the time

Jim, this castle (ruins) (see picture )
is practically beside those wheels
so must have been in use mainly for the castle's needs at the time

it's an open air castle

it's all a facade

Beautiful shots of that lichen covered wheel, Marie. I love these old reminders of the "Industrial Revolution". Thanks for showing them.
