For newborn shots in natural light on a Canon 30D. Anyone have first hand experience with either of these lenses?

No i don't but i was facing the same decision and i ended up getting the Sigma
30mm f1.4 in preference to these two. Hasn't arrived as yet but the reviews were good so i am anxiously waiting. |

Unless you really only want to use the lens on newborns (and even then), I'd get something longer. Either way, I'd get something with macro capability. I had the 50mm compact macro and within several months my daughter started grabbing the lens as soon as I came close enough for good framing. These 50mm are comparable to 30mm on your camera, so a 50mm macro might actually work for you. All my fancy portrait lenses were of little use and stayed in the bag.
Similarly, babies are so tiny that even what you think is a portrait ends up being a macro shot. For your camera I'd get a 50 or 60mm macro, there is a new tamron 60mm which gives you F/2 for low light portaits.

For newborns I use my 50mm f1.4 and my 100mm f2.8 Macro. I LOVE the 50, but at times want something a little wider if I'm in a confined area (I go to clients homes for newborns) and for indoor family shots. I just ordered my 28mm f1.8 today. I'll let you know how I like it on my next newborn shoot.

I went ahead and got a 28mm f/1.8, I already have the 100mm Macro and a nifty 50. I found the 50 to long for newborns on my 30D. The 28 is great, I am very happy with it.

Chrisa,
YAY! I'm so glad you like the 28 since mine will be here Friday. I can't wait to test it out! |

I own both a 50mm (f/1.8 Mkii) and the 28mm f/1.8 Canon offerings. I'm at a toss up between the two when it comes to infant and toddler shots. If I had to break it down, I go with the 28mm indoors which is perfect when trying to catch my niece and nephew. The 50 is usually on outdoors when I have a little more room to work with. Regardless, I've gotten some great results out of both!
Congrats on your 28mm! |
