Been reading the following articles and am seeking owners of 20D and 50 f1.4 lens feedback on experiences using this lens as relating to statements in these articles. They tend to indicate that the f1.4 lens has a high level of focus variance when used with the 20D and not a pro body.
Thoughts? http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/re...ssage=12756992 http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/re...ssage=12794733 http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/re...ssage=12756188 http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/re...ssage=12756016 http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/re...ssage=12770191 http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/re...ssage=12790092

Im almost about to cancel my canon re calibration test on the 20d, ie pick it up again. As it looks like what i am experiencing is normal with the f1.4.
Please any assistance or advice would be appreciated.

I've not used mine too much, just for a wedding and a theatre shoot mainly, but it appears to work as advertised. The way to work it out yourself is to do a focus test a bunch of times, at different distances, and manually focus it on infinity or minimum focus distance between shots. Remember at F1.4 it's often the photographer causing the problems, not the equipment, I know bad shots are often my fault not the gears.

As Tim said...it's usually the photog's fault...
At anything up to 60cm at f1.4 there is less than 1cm depth of field. At 80cm, there's 2cm depth of field At 1 metre, 4cm At 3 metres, 32cm So there's not much to play with up close, this improves greatly at 3 metres, but given that at f4.0 you have almost a metre depth of field compared to f1.4, there's certainly a big difference. Programs like breeze browser are great, as you can see which focusing square(s) were used for each shot - you can see what the camera focused on - sometimes not what you intended...

I found the focus gave varying results over 5 - 6 shots with most shots front focussed to some extent or another. I am well aware of the low dof the 1.4 provides, however my tests didnt provide me with the focus consistency i would have expected.

Nabil,
sorry, but I am NOT going to get a headache from reading the DPR forum My 50/1.4 seems to be working very well on my 20D, according to the makeshift focus test I did. My Sigma 30/1.4, on the other hand, is front focusing 5-10 cm at a distance of 1 meter Best regards, Andy
