Great series, I remember watching when they first came out. Very interesting how each camera excelled in it's own way rather than 1 camera leading the way in all aspects.

Just finished episode 1. Very, very interesting so far, whether you do digital video or not.

Still too bad that all current DSLRs and even the new Panasonic AF100 use 8-bit 4:2:0 long-gop mpeg compression. It's ok if you get the look right in camera, but starts to fall apart if you do any greenscreen, grading and/or effects.
If Panny also threw in AVCintra/P2 as standard on the AF100, made it a full-size cam and given it a proper video lens, more than a few people would be all over it, myself included.

Not saying everyone needs to do 300-style effects, but it would be nice to shoot a neutral image and then choose a "look" in post and not worry about artifacts.

excellent comparison. everybody is out there fighting to produce the best dynamic range now. canon is rumor to have dynamic range like RED, ~20stops.
I believe, as soon as digital becomes more powerful w/ dynamic range where it comes to human's eye, film will be obsolete. |
