Default Looking for a lens between (18,24) - (70,135)

I have a digital Rebel with the 18-55, 50, and 70-200 4L
I'm looking for a good lens in the range between (18,24) - (70,135)
I'm not very satisfied with the 18-55
What is the best choice in this range for US$ 500?
Are canon lenses always better or are sigma or tamron as good ?
Thanks for any tip.
