Default Ruffed Grouse or Pheasant ???

I came upon this bird today while out shooting on the back raods of New York.

I believe it to be a ruffed grouse, can someone confirm that is what it is?

I can only say it sure doesn't look like a pheasant. Grouse? Maybe, if that's a crest on its head......

Thanks Wallace River,
I am going to assume it to be a Ruffed Grouse.

Definitely a ruffed grouse. Female ring-necked pheasants have plain-colored breasts. Very nice photos!

I have been looking and it appears you only have spruce grouse and ruffed grouse in New York. If it were Michigan, I can tell you for sure it is a ruffed grouse. I may have missed something in searching but the pictures of spruce grouse look nothing like that one and that one looks like all of the ruffed grouse I have seen.
