just got it back today. viewfinder is spotless. the paperwork says they completed the mirror fortification, inspection, cleaning, and image sensor cleaning. It doesn't specify however if they replaced the focus screen or updated the firmware, which I needed. I'll have to check when i get home. but otherwise - great service =)

When mine came back it said
found mirror broken and replaced tested and all mirror, sensor etc. cleaned, my 5D was in perfect condition and I never had any problem at all with it so I was a little surprised on what the wo said.

My mirror just fell out. Quick question. Do you just send it in with the mirror loose inside the body? Wouldn't it rattle around and potentially damage something?

i wouldn't send it in with the mirror rattling around it's bound to scratch up your focusing screen and other internals - maybe stick the mirror on a little ziplock bag or something along with the camera. call canon and tell them what happened. i think they'll send you a shipping label and give you instructions on how to ship it.

Picked up 1 of my 5D's used from Calumet back in Feb 2011. Mirror fell off during a shoot these past 2 weeks ago. Called Canon support, they emailed me a work order and UPS shipping label. Got it back in about a week. They fixed the mirror problem (noticed the 2 black bars to the sides now), cleaned the sensor and such and t works great. Not bad considering how old this model is, (but still captures images like a champ!) and they still fixed it for free. I picked up a 2nd 5D for a great deal, and flawless (original black paint is still complete on the hotshoe.) I noticed it doesn't have the fix. Do you think Canon will fix it as a preemptive measure? In either case, Canon was awesome in getting my used 5D mirror issue fixed. Just had to share. =)

Your "new" one may not need the fix. Mine hasn't had it and Canon told me it didn't need it.

When I bought mine new (2 years ago) Canon sent me an email as soon as I registered it on the web asking me to send it in.

However, it seems that their policy has changed now and they only fix them after they break. Check your canon web site and search for Canon 5D mirror fix". It will tell you the rules.

PS - I didn't think there were "any" 5D's that didn't need the mirror fix. Mine was one of the last ones built.

I sent in mine a few days ago for the fix. The mirror wasn't broken, but they told me I should sent it in as a preemptive measure.

I had called Canon to ask for the a service history and the latest known shutter count of my newly acquired used 5Dc. He told me he couldn't give me either, but would check if it had been in for the recall.

I had to pay for shipping - grrr.

Sent mine in for the recall a few weeks ago.

Shipping was free, they sent me a label via email.

Same thing with trying to get this history of the camera over the phone, they wouldnt give it to me.

I sent in the camera with 2 different pieces of paper; the work order and a note I wrote requesting the shutter count and they did not provide it to me. I was able to get it over the phone after I got the camera back.

The VF was an absolute mess when I sent it in and came back looking great, I was very happy with that. The sensor came back actually worse than before sending it in, but thats another story.

Call 1-800-ok-canon and follow the steps, the Canon reps. are super helpful and great to deal with.

Thanks for that. I actually called right after I read your post, and yes, canon was able to give me the count. Cool I'm at 23,117

What country are you in? There have been some people posting on here that people in northern latitudes (like Canada and the UK and northern EU) don't need to bother with the mirror fix because the mirror only falls off in hot countries.

I don't believe thats true - I think its a problem with the original fastening method and that it could be affected by vibration, long term use etc as well as heat.

Mirror fell off on Saturday while out taking some pics. Heard something strange and took the lens off and BAM, the mirror falls to the ground and smashes.

Called Canon that night and got a UPS label on Monday from them. Shipped it out Mon afternoon and UPS shows "dropped off at dock". So I called Canon just now to make sure that they do in fact have it and was told that they do have it and that it is currently being "tested extensively". I hope that means that they fixed the mirror already and are just verifying it works.
