I always assumed the back was glass, but I guess I stand corrected.

However I do remember reading the rear LCD on the 7D is not a simple replacement as it is glass vs plastic and has special sealing, maybe someone can comment.

Yes, the 7D's LCD Protector (and, IIRC, that of the 1D MkIV) is glass and there is no air gap between the LCD and the protector. That suggests to me that it would not be as easy to replace. However, being glass, it should be much harder to scratch.

(Perhaps this should go in a new thread)

I just performed a similar LCD repair on my t3i. Here's a few things to note:

1. The process is exactly the same, and it's also the same process for the 60D.
2. The back screen and tape for the 60D and T3I are the same, so if you try to order the part for the t3i and they don't have it in stock, order it for the 60D.

Frank you may be right about the MK IV being glass. I have one but can't really tell for sure. I do know the earlier 1D's are plastic as well and I have replaced the LCD on a 1D exactly the same way, all be it, without the suction cup.

The Mk IV LCD glass (?) isn't listed in the parts catalog as being a seperate part either - which means you'd need to shell out for a whole rear cover if it broke or needed replacing. I have a suspicion that the 7D's the same but haven't seen a 7D parts catalog to confirm...

Just replaced my cover on my 5D2 after cracking it in a decent sized fall. It landed on my 1D3/70-200 2.8 IS (which also fell). The cover cracked so badly it pressed against the actual LCD so now I have a nice green glow in the spots where they contacted. Lovely :)

I've seen a glass screen protector for the LCD protector on eBay. Will those help in terms of impact resistance?
