Default Joining the 5D2 ranks - just bought the kit to go with my 7D

Long store short, I shoot a lot of landscape and night timelapse but also shoot motorcycle racing - two very opposite ends of photography. I had to make do with just one body and the 7D did pretty well in that respect. But I've been wanting to move to full frame for quite a while, and had my heart set on the 5D2 for its ISO performance.

Finally pulled the trigger on Sunday and ordered the kit from BH. I had been monitoring prices for quite some time and this was the cheapest I had ever seen them, so I feel pretty happy about my deal.

I'm so eager to receive it I've already put it and the 24-105 into my signature.

Just thought I'd share.

I wonder if you'll start thinking about selling your 7D. I don't use mine now. That said, I don't shoot any sports.

My 7D has definately taken a back seat to the 5D2. It only comes out for some occasional sports and wildlife. Everything else, the 5D2 delivers better results.

My 7D will stay with me for when I use a second body. Frequently I have had two cameras recording different timelapse scenes simultaneously (usually by borrowing my friend's 40D or my girlfriend's sister's 30D which I helped her buy).

That said, I'm sure the 7D will take a backseat unless I am shooting stuff that requires the nicer AF or extra reach.

That is the same camera combination I use. The 7D and the 5DII complement each other very well for my two main interests. The 7D for wildlife and the 5DII for landscapes and travel. Both cameras get lots of use. Enjoy!

The 7D is a toy when put beside the mighty and wondrous 5D2. If you can't bear to sell it, hide it away in a closet or the basement so it won't embarrass you any longer.

I think you are highly mistaken. Sure, the 5D2 has superior image quality, but that only comes into play when you are shooting static objects.

The 7D has a far superior AF system not to mention 8 FPS so in a sports situation it will absolutely slaughter the 5D2.

The 5D2 and 7D each excel in their own categories and together are the best pair of cameras to have short of the 1 series line up but to say the 7D is a toy is a bit overzealous.

You'll just love the 5DII for everything, except things that move fast.

If he does, put me in line.

I even have a pristine 5D2 that I am gonna get rid of! ( probably still under Canon warranty - gotta check that receipt. )

If I end up having to sell a body it'll be the 5D2. The 7D is a much better all around body. The 5D2 is amazing in what it does, but it's limited. The 7D can do anything - granted it wont do those landscape and portrait pictures as well as the 5D2, but it will still do them.

Hi, congratulations on your new arrival, I have the same setup and I have to say I think you will very happy with the whole family. If you dont have to sell your 7D to recoup funds I would keep it as back up/alternative to the 5D2 if you need the extra reach. The 7D is a great camera with great IQ but it's not as good as the 5D2 IMO.
I have used my 5D2 for sports, wildlife, birds in flight and all the other types of photos that need a faster AF. Dont believe everything about how bad the 5D2's AF is, cause it really isn't bad at all. Ok, so it's not as fast as the 7D but it's certainly no slouch. The 24-105 f4 L is a brilliant lens perfectly mated to the 5D2 for the reach and the IQ, which is incredible. Even if you shoot Jpeg's only with the 5D2 it really does give great quality photos.

But isn't that true with the 5D2? It can do sports and action shots, but not as good as the 7D, but it will still do them.
