I was surprised to get any detail at all out of my Sigma 80-400mm on the 7D. I can definitely tell it's Jupiter though. My first real try at a planet.
This is about a billion% crop ![]()

Well the original looked like a hot pixel! So when I zoom in and actually see some features of Jupiter, I was amazed.
Jupiter is the brightest thing in the sky other than the moon. I find it in the WSW sky around, and after sunset. You really can't miss it. Go get a copy of Stellarium, I love it. Free 3D interactive star map. http://www.stellarium.org/

not bad for the first shot. Not sure if 7D has the crop video mode. If so and you have some tracking ability, you could try record videos and stack thousands of frames to improve S/N ratio. blow is the Jupiter I took last year when the Jupiter was in its opposition.

and what program do you like to use to stack video straight from a Canon? By the way Venus is the brightest object other than the Moon, with Jupiter a close second. Jupiter and Venus will appear be getting closer to each other over the next few months.

Registax will stack the .avi output from a Canon's video output.
