Hello P.O.T.N, i recently purchased a 7D new body from ebay. I purchased a kit lens for 28-135mm used for $150. The lense are kinda stiffy but it works for taking photos. I can zoom all the way with no problem. But when i try to use it for video and i zoom anything after 28mm it stops the video and kicks me back to photo mode. Am I doing something wrong or is it my lense or body?
I mean i can record and focus right when i leave it at 28mm. Thanks |

Are you sure it's the zoom causing the problem and not something else? What kind of memory card are you using?

That is odd. Never had a similar problem with my 7D. Never even seen anyone else with this problem. Watch where your fingers are and make sure you aren't unknowingly pushing a different button while you zoom. Then of you can, get another lens and try the same thing.

I should call Canon Customer Service? Edit: I forgot to mention, I overly check if i was touching anything else and it still happens..I noticed that when I was adjusting the ISO, Aperture, and Shutter Speed it KICKED me out as well. So I tried it again while shooting video and it didn't do it..So I'm pretty lost here.. But no matter what I do when Zooming, it will always kick me out of video mode. I would test with another lens. See if you can isolate the problem to the camera or lens then talk to the seller.

What exposure mode are you using for video? That lens is not constant aperture. When you zoom it, the max wide open aperture varies. It could be you're moving the aperture out of the correct exposure range. I've never tried a non constant aperture lens on my 7D in video, so this is just a hypothesis on my part, something to check. Also, the sensor gets warm with the constant current of video mode and the Camera will turn off video mode if the sensor gets too warm.

The 55-200mm f/4-5.6 is not a constant aperture lens, it ranges from f/4 at the 55mm end to 5.6 at the 250mm end. I would also avoid Best Buy, there are better places to get those lenses for a lower price, like amazon or b&h

I would just go to Bestbuy and test out a few lens there.
