Yes, I know. I don't find them to be such an abomination though. You can even buy them in Japan, as "international rolls" from time to time. The hipsterization of Japanese cuisine, however, leaves a bit to be desired.

Gotcha. I make a habit of booking a hotel just outside Ginza the night we arrive in Tokyo so that while we're jetlagged and wake up 3 in the morning, we can make a dash to Tsukiji market and its small hole in the wall restaurants that cater to the workers (but mostly tourists nowadays).

The sad state of California Rolls here is that they are prepackaged with dry, brittle brown rice and sold near fish department in the supermarkets.
