I just read through this thread and I have to laugh. You guys are just now discovering large deep reflectors that are one of the oldest lighting tools in the trade.
When I started learning lighting the in theater 40+ years ago we used lekos, fresnels and down lights. The Maxi Lite is a down light. A down light in the theater had a large tungsten 'globe' (bulb) that was round and a little larger than Elinchrom's satin dome covering the flash tube. Down lights were the softest of the hot lights and were used closest to the set. We used wire scrims to diffuse the light and to catch pieces of the globe when one overheated and imploded. Wire scrims evolved into silks which were larger and placed further away from the down lights so that they wouldn't burn up. When you put that diffusion sock on the front of your Maxi Lite you're adding the equivalent of a silk scrim. Down lights were typically aimed down stage from the actors, effectively feathering them and creating bounce to fill under the actors eyes. When you aim the Maxi Lite beneath your subjects chin you're feathering it in the same way. I use both the Maxi Lite and the Maxi Spot with my Ranger system for sports and architectural work. They're great down lights and just a simple evolution of one of the oldest modifiers ever made. Last edited by K.C. : 18th of May 2012 (Fri) at 21:30. |

The velcro tabs suggest that's a honeycombgrid.

Yup, but not really needed with the grid in the vertical. I can have the grid flush with the rim without any fit issue. I'll have to work with it this weekend to get a better idea of what I think.
======== Edit, next day Holy moly this is a cool set up. $200 you get the Fireball, grid and sock. This thing rocks! Last edited by windpig : 9th of June 2012 (Sat) at 16:52. |
