Default Questions to evoke a visual response

Avedon was a master of talking to his subjects, evoking the kind of portrait that in his opinion, suited the subjects. On Darkness and Light, you hear him say "If these were one of the Stalin portraits, if you were going to die tomorrow, would you do anything different?". There is also the story about how he evoked a reponse from the Windsors telling them about a dog they had just seen run over on the way to their place.

Do any of you do this? If so, what do you say and why? Photographers give out far too many compliments these days

When we shoot portraits, we just talk to them about anything...nothing very dramatic. Generally our pre portrait chemistry has a bigger impact than what we say in the moment.

And sadly enough- most of the world out there actually receives too few compliments, and far too often, way too many insults. Sad.
