Have any of you used Blue car rental? They seem a lot cheaper than everyone else.

This is still the one area that shocks me on price! Car rental in Iceland has to be at least 4x the price of anywhere else. In the US i can rent Corvette's cheaper than a 8yr old base model car in Iceland :/

I'm using blue car rental when I go, I'll be able to report back on them in a couple of months...

Renting a 4x4 seems to be insanely expensive.

I can just about afford a really old Suzuki Jimmy, but if i want something vaguely useful (Defender or Land Cruiser) it's approaching £2,000 for 11 days, and that is crazy money!

Sixt also appear to be much cheaper than everywhere else.

I really want to go this June during the summer solstice. I was under the impression that the lighting was great for photography (many hours of "magic hour"), is this true? Anyone want to tag along for a week driving around the country taking photos?

I've heard the same. Makes sense if you think about it, sun never/barely sets at all in mid summer, so you get several hours of it hovering near the horizon.
A mid summer trip back there is definitely on my list of things to do sometime in the near future, but for now I have to make do with an early summer one!

What type of rental car would be best for Iceland? I will probably go off road a little, but doubt i'll do anything to major.

I'm thinking of a Suzuki Jimmy or Grand Vitara? Going up to a Land Cruiser is not exactly cheap! and Landrover's are stupidly expensive!

Lots of Jimmys in Iceland, but I question their ability to ford some of the larger streams. Aside from that, you should be okay if you're not planning any off-road craziness.

That looks very helpful for planning where to go.
The English version of his eBook is now out and i've just received it. It is very helpful, and there's quite a lot of it to take in.

I have so much to plan in the new few weeks

Well I'm heading off on Friday, very excited! Thanks everyone who has contributed so far, you've been very helpful

I may just pick up that ebook, its a shame he doesn't offer it in print though.
edit: is the English version good quality? I mean few mistakes in translation etc...?

I've only had it a day so not gotten through much of it. It seems good to me. There are some minor translation mishaps, but I can't say it bothers me at all.

What is your plan and route looking like.

Thats good to hear.

I'll be heading up to the Snaefellsnes peninsula for the first 2 nights, then driving all the way down to Vik, then a bit further east toward Vatnajokull (along the coast, not in the highlands) for a couple of nights, then back to Reykjavik for my last night before leaving.

I just booked a week in August for my wife and I. So far I'm thinking of booking a night at the Blue Lagoon and keeping the rest of the days free for road trips. I still need to do some more digging to find out which areas we want to visit the most. We'd like to hear what people's highlights have been for them and see some pictures too.
