I would say no IS if on a monopod. And if it's during the day, you're probably getting very high shutter speeds, so IS wouldn't be needed anyway.

I turn it off when the exposure time is three times the focal length (1/1000 - 1/8000) or better. I recommend Mode 2 only for Motorsports.

Thanks so I'll try turning it off if shooting above 1/1000...
Is there any great benefit to having Mode 1 or Mode 2 stabilisation on the 300mm lens so? |

Mode 2 will only stabilize up and down movement. Mode 2 should be used when panning moving objects.

Unless you go for certain shoots, you don't need IS in sport at all. Normally you shoot with times so short, that IS wouldn't help at all (let's be this 300, 400, 500 or even 800mm lens). If you want sharp photos with (almost) any kind of sport, you need to get your time faster then 1/500, 1/640s, so there's really not much of help of IS with these times. So only thing you get from IS is shorter battery life. Personally I use IS only in those few % of shoots, when I shoot with slow times (1/10-1/200sec), and when I know why I'm using so slow times. For everything else, IS is off on any of my lenses (from 70-200 too 500+mm primes).

I rarely use IS for sports because I've found it to be of little use. With virtually no advantage and the dis-advantage of less battery life, I leave it off.
