I 2nd the Black Rapid strap. I can carry the DSLR all day with no issues and it is always ready to shoot. I don't care about looking like a casual citizen and although I don't wear one I would have no problem wearing a waist bag and looking like an "idiot" as you said. I don't care what other people think I look like, I'm just trying enjoy myself, and what I enjoy is taking the best photos possible. That is typically easier with my DSLR than my P&S

you can carry a messenger bag with some foam in it or something along the lines of the think tank retrospective bags. i rather have my dslr with me than a point and shoot. i say that because theres gonna be moments where you wish you had your dslr to get that amazing shot. when i travel, i just bring my camera in a sling. kit lens for versatility and a fast prime.

I got the camera bag inliner 'Haven' from Crumpler. Turns any bag into a camera bag. Really handy to have your dslr with you where ever you go.

You will be surprise alot of photogs who own big bodies and lenses still use a P&S or rely on iphone. Nokia is coming out with a 40MP camera phone. I will be looking seriously at this sort of devices as a secondary or backup camera.

For those places where you can use whatever gear you like eg. in nature parks or deserts etc, you will want to bring your big gear with you. Not only they give u better optical resolution, they give you more controls and time to play with. Again the smallish camera should still be with you in case you just need to do a quick snap of the snow leopard dashing across the mountains while you are setting up the tripod halfway!
this is incorrect. you can use a dslr anywhere in a city

Sling strap is the go - I'm happy with my carry speed, most use the trusty old black rapid - hang sby the side, and I generally rest my right hand on the camera, holding the thing steady if I'm in a crowd or moving fast. Never feel "out of place" with it, just snap away.

Take a look at this… Capture Camera Clip System

I have a few set ups that work for me depending on the situation… Think tank holster (like the Lowepro sling pack) with the modular belt system, a messenger bag, Luma Loop (like Black Rapid) and just received the Camera capture.

Im finding the sling (LL, BR) works fine and is minimal, but still have it dangling a bit and feel I have to have my hand on it to protect it more so than I want to. Look at the videos from Peak Design, and you can have your camera bag with you, but your camera fixed to your belt (or to the think tank speed belt). I like having my hands free while knowing the camera is secure, so these pieces of equipment allow me to tailor the set up to my situation depending on where I go. When I want to put the camera away, I simply put it in the bag I have with me for protection… put it out on the clip when I want to shoot without having it in my hands constantly.

I didn't say you cannot use a DSLR in a city I just meant some places are much easier to use a DSLR. And please, who doesn't know you can use any camera in the city as long as you behave yourself there. If you are trying to clear up a misconception I apologise but if you are not trying to help please refrain yourself from posting meaningless comments.

My travel kits is Canon 5D Mk ii and canon 70-200 f2.8 non IS. It's very heavy for me to carry it around.

Cool didn't know about the camera clip. Pretty cool. Really love my sun sniper camera sling

http://www.sunsniperusa.com/snipercompact.php

It says its made for smaller dslrs but I use it with my 5D3 no problem. It has a steel cable to prevent theft. It's heavy duty and does not dig into your shoulder at all.

This is the issue. Some people just do not understand that nobody actually cares how they look or what they do. I laid down on my back on asphalt trying to take a shot of the Eiffel Tower from below. I climbed rocks to take shots of the waterfalls from above. I was taking pictures of people in the cities shooting almost from upfront, and all with my 60D and a large 17-70. I have a small bag like that, and sometimes I wear it around my waist, but more often it is a backpack and a camera hanging over my neck. Nobody around me gives a damn!

I use a Kata backpack to carry gear en route, and a Passport Sling on the ground which holds my 30D and an extra lens, water bottle, pens etc. I also use a hefty wrist strap on the camera. It's pretty easy to get the DSLR out quickly but the bag does get a little heavy after a while. You can flatten the Sling in your luggage quite well, also. The 2-bag solution? Don't get me started on which lenses to take...

I use the Kata DR466i for holding my gear when traveling, but when I'm out and about, where the backpack wouldn't be as appropriate I mount the 16-35 lens or 24-70 and use the black rapid R-strap.

I find this to be the best option for me when traveling.

And I dont care what I look like when I'm shooting, it's not like you're ever gonna meet the bystanders that are bussy taking picktures of the same sight as you are.
