You say that now, but if you watch a documentary on them, they go through hell to get the perfect shots! flies, disease, hostile militants... there's a plethora of things that have happened to Nat Geo photographers that I don't think a normal person could do or endure.

You might be surprised to know that National Geographic frequently uses stock agencies to find photos!!!
I have seen a whole book regarding Africa filled with images taken from Shutterstock!!!!

ive seen a few documentaries.
One was on volcanoes where the photographer wanted to recreate his cover shot from many years earlier. they do go through great pains but I think there would be people tripping over other people to do it. I know I would if I could |

There are several pros who shot for Nat Geo in the Atlanta area. We do schedule them occasionally for presentations. I am not surprised they are not public BBSs. Most are too busy with their assignments, their own workshops, editing, and trying to have family time.

i have not, but i have been contacted by a nat geo little kids magazine editor through flickr. She googled the animal she was looking for and found my image. If the image were to ever run, i would recieve credit and $500!!!!!! Too bad that was like 3 years ago and the story never ran! It was evergreen so let's just say i was pretty disappointed that it never ran.

Well, I have caught up with a Nat Geo official last year. I asked how do I get involved in NG as a photographer. Whether you believe me or not, and you can call them and ask and you will get the same answer.
To qualify as a NG photographer you HAVE to have a degree in the arts and you must have journalistic style writing abilities. Many photographers that start out with NG have not really even had a camera or photography as a hobby. Its their documentary style abilities that are looked for. He mentioned that they normally arent interested in super duper nature photogs. Believe it or not thats the truth and I say to confirm with NG if you dont believe me. This is why if you have a look at most of the photos in the NG, they arent that great, in most cases, I bet you say to yourself that you could have done a better job!!!.....you may well can, but can you write a better story? I love NG and their magazines and I dream of working for them. In a nutshell I cant write a story to save me, I have shot wildlife that in some cases beats the pants off some images in NG. NG do use some really talented photogs, who are truly talented in their work, BUT there are many who probably have less skill than most of the users on this forum. I wouldnt put it past them to use AUTO when on assignment. Its sad, but thats the way it is. I have seen some truly amazing wildlife shots on this very forum, that in my opinion far outweigh NG photos. Best of luck if you get in one day and enjoy it. The National Geographic Channel aired a documentary a while ago on this guy:
http://www.joelsartore.com/ In it he mentioned that at least once a week he hears from someone asking how to get a job like his - and his reaction is "why would they want it!" If you get a chance to see the show, you'll understand his reaction. You still might want the job, though.
