One more advantage a mount has is that most feature "go-to" technology, which once set up, will point you to whatever you are trying to see if you don't know the night sky very well.

I have to ask what kind of photos you want to take...

Deep sky images like nebulas, galaxies and clusters?
Planetary images like Jupiter, Mars, Saturn and the Moon?
Wide fields like the Milky Way?
Night sky photos including the landscape?

Unfortunately each option needs completely different equipment.

For example for good deep sky images you need a mount, a telescope a second scope for guiding, a laptop, power sources, a 2nd camera for guiding, dew control system, and the imaging camera (you already have that!)
Then you have to take everything to a dark location, setup, take the photos, go back home and process them.

It's not easy!

One thing to keep in mind is that most telescope camera attachments will vignette on a full-frame camera, but you can of course crop that off if needed.

the celestron cs6-ngt can do astrophotography very well and it is cheaper than an astro trac. In fact it doubles as an astro trac if you mount your camera piggy back to the telescope. You cant go wrong with the cs6ngt my old neighbor had one and we lived in the suburbs so there was really bad light pollution but he was still able to get some awesome long exposure of galaxies and nebulas with this scope.

Speaking from experience, the mount is the most important piece of the system. When purchasing a new setup, you should spend at least 2/3 of the $$ on the mount. Since no one mentioned it, have you consider using a fork mount on an equatorial wedge? It eliminates the need for a scope flip after a meridian transit.

With the 5D III and and other full frame camera, u need a 2" focusing tube. The 1.25" found on many low end scope is not going to work.

Do you have sample images of this kind of mount ? I've never seen this setup before in my 15 yrs of being an amateur astronomer . Been alot of changes since i started but not what your talking about . Also you might mention this will not work with a refractor , only a SCT and if you have a camera hooked up at PF then you have another problem especially if shooting at zenith .

Ron I know you have seen fork mounted scopes on a wedge.
