Default DIY diffuser ideas for mx-14ex ring flash?

got any? i'm looking to soften up the lighting for my ring flash, has anybody "doctored" up theirs? i'm thinking maybe something like this might work, a "milky" plastic cone attatched to the front of the flash.

This would spread the ligt out, but as for softness, i think the diameter of the ringflash is the issue. The light is softened by the fact that the ringflash acts almost a single lightsource the diameter of it.

hmm a more permanent softening solution might be to use sandpaper on the plastic ring so that it becomes non transparent.
