I have a new canon 50D and use RAW. What is the best Adobe package - just for basic photography, not video , etc? Elements 6 does not seem or wan to work. Should I upgrade to Elements 8 or buy a full CS3 or CS4 package? Any advice much appreciated.

For good advice on Elements (any version) go to www.elementsvillage.com

Don't give up on Elements just yet.

I have a question about Cannon lenses and need some help. It is not for me as I am not a photographer but a production manager trying to solve a problem for a Director of Photography.

Question:

Do Cannon lenses say a 50mm 1.2- are they pre set to full open? As opposed to Nikon lenses automatic setting. He is looking to shoot full open and put his own ND's on.

Or if you get older lenses like a 50mm 1.0 or 50mm .95 can you alter the aperature on them so they are and remain full open? Would these be EF mount lenses?

Lots of questions for a newb and I might not understand your answers but I appreciate any help going forward.

Thanks

Not sure exactly what you are asking here.... When you take most cannon lenses off the camera, they will be at their largest aperture setting. There is a way around this by holding the Depth of Field Preview button while removing the lens. This will lock the aperture to whatever setting the camera had been set to.

When you put a lens on your camera, it will typically stay at wide open until you release the shutter or hold the DOF preview button, assuming you selected a smaller aperture on the camera. This helps focus and allows for a brighter optical viewfinder.

Did I answer your question?

Bottom line, if you want wide open shots, there is no trick to learn to do so. Set the camera to Av or M, Select the widest aperture (Lowest F-stop value), and shoot away.

A Canon EF lens such as the 50mm f/1.2 "L" lens "communicates" with a Canon EOS camera to adjust the aperture and also to acheive Auto Focus (AF), all automatically.

So, the way it works is the lens is "wide open" when you view your scene through the viewfinder and half-press to meter the scene and to focus (assuming you are using the default shutter button focus). During this time the lens is working with the camera to do the AF. When you fully press to take the shot the lens then adjusts the aperture according to your exposure setting.

The one way of getting a "real-time" aperture setting is to press the Depth Of Field Preview button. You can then see through the viewfinder or on the rear screen using Live View the relative effect of the narrower aperture.

I've never used older lenses (non-EF lenses) but if you have one I believe you need a special adapter to fit an EOS camera. And like you supposed, everything would be manual -- changing the aperture as well as focusing, since an EF lens is required to "communicate" with an EOS camera.

Great post, but the title may be a bit misleading.

"All About Canon" infers that the post will provide a lot of information about the company. Yet when reading the post, I realized that you only include information about Canon's imaging division.

Canon is an enormous corporation, and making cameras and lenses is only a very small part of the corporation's overall production. They could ditch the whole photography division and it would only register as a small hiccup to their overall gross earnings.

A post that truly told "all about Canon" would include far, far more than info about their photographic products.

Sheldon,

I've been a member her for a while, but today's the first time I actually clicked on this link to see what it was. Seeing ALL of this information, and knowing how time consuming it can be to make, I really want you to know that I sincerely appreciate what you have done, you saved all of us a lot of searching, should we want, or need to know.
Only yesterday I was wondering about when a couple of the cameras came out, and lo, and behold...

Thank you, I mean it too, that is a nice thing that you've done.

Randy
