Hello, I am new to photography, actually I shoot a lot more video than still. I have a t3i and I have loved the Video I have seen from the 50mm f/1.2L usm.
But I never use auto focus when doing video. There is an fd version of this lens that is manual focus, its cheaper, and has the red ring also, but needs an adapter. My questions are, 1. is there any quality difference at all between the 2? Even with the adapter? 2. Can you still shoot at 1.4 with the red ring fd version, the way you can on the usm version? Thanks! I want to save some cash, but I want to be happy with the quality foremost. |

You would need an adapter with optics (ie: teleconverter) for the FD lens to focus to infinity on an EF body. Most of those adapters are pretty cheap. Therefor the optics are not going to be stellar. You might take a huge quality hit going this route. Plus the 50mm f/1.2L FD could still set you back a lot of cash. Manual or automatic aperture control will not be available. You shoot wide open and focus manually.
Better get a good used manual lens. That is going to save you a ton of cash. Or buy the EF 50mm f/1.2L and be very happy. |

Here is one for old 50 1.2, glass free and no problem with aperture control, if I'm not mistaken. They have different adapters for different old 50 1.2.
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/180855493584?...84.m1438.l2649 But it is not compatible with 5Dc and 5D MK II. This is why I didn't purchaised it. I like old OM Zuiko 50 1.4, it has very good MF and it is not expensive lens, including adaptors. Old Carl Zeiss 50 1.4 Contax mount is more expensive, but also easy to convert to EOS.
