2. Tall leg points towards the weight if you are hanging something off the arm.

3. Sandbag goes on the tall leg. Never let the sandbag touch the floor. If its a big sandbag you can wrap it around the shaft of the stand.

4. Put tennis balls on the feet of the stand if in someone's house.

5. When putting the stand away line up all the knuckles and tighten them all. Nothing is more annoying then picking up a stand and a shaft goes flying out.

6. Never leave the arm pointed out at eye level with nothing on it. Someone will run into it. If you must, put a tennis ball over it.

7. When carrying a stand and you approach a corner or a doorway or you need to carry it through a bunch of people yell Hot points! Hot points! so you don't whack someone with the stand.

Those are the most common mistakes I see grips and assistants make.
Most seem common sense things but good points. Don't understand #4.

To prevent legs from scratching floor, etc. Also slides easier.

Cut a slice in the ball and slip it through the feet just like old folks do with their walkers.

I use the LumoPro LP605's for my speedlights. They are lightweight and collapse down well for portability... I like the way the legs adjust and they have spikes if needed outside.

I use the LS3900 for my AB1600 and soft box. It's a much heavier duty stand that is very stable with the added weight and leverage of the bigger light.

I sometimes use a small LS1100 back light stand.

Tennis balls also good for when at a sandy beach - so stands don't sink and also bright color visually alerts people to the potential hazard, so people don't trip over stand legs etc.
[Kind of like a "law of torts" thing i.e. responsible to point out hazards; I have the lime yellow ones, 3 tennis balls per package].

Manfrotto's 3"-33.5inch's, 4ft's [for backgrounds, special effects etc.]
Manfrotto's 6ft 2inch's(Nano's) [for Canon 580EXII's]
Manfrotto's air cushioned & nesting - 6.75ft's, 7.75ft's [for Canon 580EXII's & Litepanel LED]
Manfrotto's air cushioned & nesting - 9ft's & 12ft's [for Profoto D1-500Air's monolights and California Sun-Bounce reflectors, sun filters & scrims]
Westcott's - 8ft's [for Westcott reflectors, flags/gobo's]

Does anyone know a lightstand that when picked up, the legs retract? And when you want to spread out the legs you push the lightstand down to the floor and never locking it in place.

Please let know thanks!

Just out of curiosity, is there any low cost well made stands. You see a bunch on Ebay and Amazon like brands PBL and JTL.

I know, you get what you pay for. Sometimes you luck out.
