Default another "help, I don't know what to charge for..." thread

Just got an email from a local non-profit with this request:

"Could you let me know what your pricing would be for non-exclusive use of a photo for a book cover that would be in print and also available digitally?"

I'm assuming this means some kind of limited license. Not sure how wide their distribution is, (or even if that matters). I'm familiar with the org, and in support of their efforts, so getting the most $ for the transaction is not a high priority, but I also don't want to devalue my work (or that of others) by just giving it to them.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Not sure if this part of your question, but it looks what they want to do is get a license to use your image on a book cover. The non-exclusive part means you'd still be able to sell the image to someone else for their book cover, too, rather than them essentially "buying" all rights to the image.

Perhaps you know better, but just because an organization is a non-profit doesn't mean they don't have $$$.

Right. I think that is my understanding as well, though you've articulated it better.

What I need to figure out is how much to charge them...

Is this a photo that you've already taken or one they want you to create?

^^ checked out a few of these before, but only found peripherally relevant items, so I figured I'd ask here, too.

Use the calculator to determine market value, then have a good relaxing think and decide how much you are willing to discount that price for what appears to be a good cause. Dont get too caught up in the idea of devaluing the market, just pick a price that satisfies your sense of fairness.
