Totally comfortable with ISO4000 -- so long as the images is exposed well.

Roger that Jcolman. You can hit 6400 if you expose properly. If you underexpose you're going to be in a sea of noise.

I have a 16x20 print of this image that I shot with mt Mk II at 12,800 hanging in my gallery. It looks great. I normally try to stay below 6400, but this wedding made me a lot less scared of 12,800 in a pinch.

Everyone's noise tolerances are so interesting to me. I started shooting with the 20d and 300d and the 5d2 noise at 6400 looks like the 20d at 1600 to me, and the noise pattern is better. I had no problem shooting the 20d at 1600, but I am a "shoot to the right" guy.

I have no problem printing at ISO6400 on my 1Dmk3 and Nikon D700. Not even a second thought or hesitation. We're talking wedding photos here. Now if we were talking about commercial product photography... totally different story.
I'd print at higher ISO, but I've never actually had a need for higher ISO than 6400. Now if they had ISO6/12/25/50... THAT would be useful to me. But 12800? 102400? Are you %^@$#^ kidding me?

Lloyd, that photo above was 1/80, f1.4, ISO 12,800. Darkest ceremony of my career.

Jamie, you are the man! That is a great shot. I have shot above 2000 a lot, but I don't love it. I shoot a lot of concerts. But the 5D2 is amazing for noise reduction, so much better than my 7D. I like the results of anything I can get without having to go above 3000.

Jamie, that's awesome and what lens is it and did you do in cam and or a lot of pp noise reduction. I never do nr because I feel like it makes the images less sharp but at 12000 I guess you have to a little.

Thanks Suzie & Adam!
I used the 85 f1.2 for that one. The ceremony happened outdoors at night, with big spotlights lighting the bridal party from the back. Unfortunately, the couple was under the chuppa, which was full enclosed, so not much of the light from the spotlights made it in. I pushed flash in there for a bit, then snuck around behind to experiment with crazy high ISO. I was only brave enough to take a few like this before turning my flash back on, but I was really excited with the results. I process the RAWS is DPP, so the NR was whatever default DPP applied to it. If you look closely, you can see a bit of grain in the print, but it is perfectly acceptable.

It appears that is exactly what you did, and only took a few available light shots as an experiment.

To sound like a broken record, the content is more important than noise. Most clients will not care if there is noise/grain in the picture as long as it is meaningful and not blurry. Don't be afraid to push the iso, but at the same time, if you can use flash, use it. OCF is your friend.
