These mallards were kind enough to pose for a profile portrait for me before moving on for a swim.

Hello! First post in this thread. The first one was taken on our flight home from Orlando, Florida. I have no idea which state this is. The second is from a WWE event in Pittsburgh, back in December '11. I owned the sx30is before selling it to get this one, and I really like the capabilities and images from this camera much more.

Heres one of the "supermoon" the other night.

This is full 35x zoom, only cropped slightly and resized for web, no other pp/enhancements.

Basically, since I bought my SX40 I have done a few moon sessions, thats about it. I spend my summers down at the jersey shore so until then my SX40 doesn't get much use. I also have a Panasonic FZ150 which I have barely used, so both are going to get a good workout shortly as the summer starts here in Jersey in a couple more weeks.

Nice pictures, barabbalibero.

Care to share any post processing on the moon shot? I just can't get that good of a shot from my SX40 no matter how hard I try.

good moon shots do not result from post processing. it starts with the right camera settings and a tripod. barabbalibero used 840mm, f/5.9, 1/64s, ISO 100. usually people get bad moonshots due to the camera overexposing. the simple thing to do is under expose the image either by using a faster shutter speed and a smaller aperture. the overexposing is caused by the camera's metering system. the camera detects that most of the image is dark, therefore, its going to force itself to create a brighter exposure.

imjason is right, post processing is a minor aspect; in this case I only worked on contrast level.
I tried to put myself up to take a good moon shot by using a tripod, switching off image stabilization, putting a lens hood to block unwanted street light, choosing two seconds self-timer to reduce camera shake and shooting raw (DNG).
I usually do 6-8 shots at differents shutter speed, from 1/20s to 1/160s and take the best one.

Besides, gibbous moon is more interesting than full moon. Look at the picture I take at the supermoon a week later:

IMG_0919 di barabbalibero1, su Flickr

that is a flat surface, without the waxing moon tridimensionality effect.
And, by the way, the seeing is important too; that was a very crispy night .

Ciao,
Ila
