Default G1X Teleconverter vs. Digital Zoom

I see that my G1X has both a digital teleconverter and a digital zoom in addition to the hardware zoom. What would be the advantages and disadvantages of each? Don't they both accomplish the same thing? My understanding is that image quality suffers from the digital zoom, thus I always leave it turned off.

Digital zoom is just in-camera cropping. You can do the same thing in post.

Thanks for your response. In your blog you use the term "up-rezzed." I am assuming you mean that the resolution is increased by interpolation? Or does the use of the Teleconverter method imply that interpolation is not necessary?

Originally I sort of thought that the digital zoom utilized software interpolation, which detracts from IQ whereas the teleconverter probably did not. Are you saying that the images using the Teleconverter and the digital zoom are both "up-rezzed" through interpolation? Your statement that neither seems to cause a blurrier image would seem to indicate otherwise, as interpolation surely degrades the IQ, right?

Yes, the "resolution" is increased by software interpolation whether in digital zoom or digital teleconverter. I don't know the algorithm used for interpolation. I compared the in-camera result to my own crop and upscale using Photoshop but could not see a lot of difference.
