I've been debating this lens. The images look great, but how does it do as a general telephoto lens? Have not had time to make it to the local camera shop to check one out yet.

It may be too late for comments, but still...
This lens is very nice for general telephoto purposes. It has no CA, no fringing, no distortion. Impressive sharpness from corner to corner, good bokeh, decent AF speed (at least faster than EF 100/2.8 non-L USM Macro in my comparison). The only flaw I can think of is a visible amount of vignetting on full frame (which is easily correctable in PP). Some say that their copies have AF accuracy problems. My copy seems to be just fine AF-wise. However, Sigma is a third party manufacturer so it is possible and you should check the AF before buying (or before you decide if the lens stays or goes back to you preferred online retailer).

Usually I don't use this combination for telephoto, because the AF is not that great with 2xTC. Just a random sample here https://lh4.googleusercontent.com ...UqK2STEvC4/I/IMG_3368.jpg (external link)

No, no animals, with 2xTC AF is pretty slow and it hunts a lot, only usable for stationary objects. Now I have MagicLantern installed on my 5D2 (firmware 2.0.9) and the AF does not work with 2xTC, at all. It did work with earlier firmware 2.0.8, However, I did not miss it :).
