Default "The computer cannot detect ... " HELP Please!

As I type this the tears of frustration are streaming down my face onto my keyboard. I hope that I don't get electricuted.

I have tried various forums but it seems no one can help me. You may recall from my earlier posts that I am trying to load Personal Settings onto my 1D2. I have uninstalled all the Canon software and reinstalled it. I then went to Canon USA and installed each update (restarting my computer each time when requested - this took quite a while!!) I connected my camera by firewire as per the software instruction disc (which I followed exactly). The computer (OS - XP) made the acknowledgement sound and the icon appeared in the camera and scanners window. When I clicked on the icon the dialogue box said that "The computer cannot detect ... " I then went via All programmes to the Camera window only to be told "Cannot detect camera". I have rechecked the connection which must be ok as the 1D2 icon is there.

Any suggestions on how to proceed?

PS If anyone could spare a couple of minutes to set up my ideal Personal settings on their 1D2 and email them to me I would be eternally grateful. Vince Ross was the only POTN member who was kind enough to do this but unfortunately 1D2N settings don't work on a 1D2. Can you please help me?

With the camera attached, if you go to My Computer, do you see the camera or perhaps the meory card listed as a drive? If you don't, then disconnect the camera, then go to Control Panel> Hardware And Sound > Scanners and Cameras. Reattach the camera, and then turn it on. Hopefully you'll get an "Add device" icon on the screen; if so click on add device. A wizard should help you with the rest of the steps.

Do you have the correct drivers for your operating system installed? Looks like XP, make sure you don't have Win7 drivers. Try using a USB port instead of Firewire.

I am running Linux. All the programs that can control the camera require that I 'Unmount' the device first and then they recognize it. It is counterintuitive but it works. Right-click, Unmount. It doesn't take long to try it...

Windows is confused. You need to make sure the camera is completely uninstalled before trying to re-install anything.

With the camera attached, Go to the control panel > hardware > and find your camera. UNINSTALL IT. Unhook the camera from the computer. Reboot the computer.

Go back to the control panel and make sure the camera is gone. IF not, delete it again. REBOOT the computer again. Now, re-install the camera as directed. It will work fine.

PM me if you have any questions.

I've realized Windows was confused ever since I was first certified as an MCSE on Win NT 4.
But it's what ya have to deal with.

I was gonna ask .......

Did it work before?

What have you changed since?

If it worked before and you made no changes to you software/OS system ..... try another cable.

Something like this can happen with Windows XP- if you go tell it to use this driver, and it warns you that it might not be the driver, then you still insist- and tell Windows to load this driver anyways.

I'd try the uninstall route first. If that does not work- go into Device Manager, and find the device ( it might show as having an issue, or as an Unknown Device. Change the view so that you are viewing "Devices by connection" . Expand the trees till you find your device again. Go up one tree level- and Uninstall the USB Root Hub, and then remove your camera- and shut down the system. Power on the system after it shuts down- leaving camera disconnected.. When Windows is back up- attempt to reinstall the device. Be sure to use the right drivers..

Newer Operating Systems don't seem to have this problem as much- haven't seen it with Windows 7 yet- although it was fairly common with Windows XP.

Just a suggestion, Make sure your computer has a POWERED firewire port. The cable will be full size on both ends, versus a mini. Often a unpowered port will detect the attached camera but will fail to make the connection actually work. Google "firewire port" and look at ebay for firewire ports. If you are using a desktop computer chances are that it will be a powered port, a laptop usually comes with a mini firewire port which is unpowered. You can get a powered port adapter with provision for a AC adapter for the pc card slot on a laptop if necessary.

Just a correction to my reply post above, I failed to note that you have a ID MKII, the above would only refer to a ID classic, the MkII has a mini port (4 pin I think) while the classic has a full size (6 pin), I have both models and just now noticed the difference. I have found many references to firewire port failures when I Googled, perhaps your port is bad. Maybe try another computer?

I had this happen all the time with win xp with both my xti and my canon point and shoot. so frustrating! I kept trying and eventually It would work, but sometimes took awhile.

I haven't had any problems with my new one with win7. But I used a card reader now, back then I didn't.

Are you running XP or are you running Vista in XP appearance mode?

Vista is not compatible with the 1D/1D2, but some people do have luck getting it to work by installing the Canon TWAIN driver for the camera.

The story so far
Uninstalled all Canon software (incl Pixma printer) - Man I had to search deep for some of it. 10 years of owning Canons sure builds a huge and diverse footprint.

I uninstalled the camera.

I then installed EOS Solution disc v11.0 (which Canon sent me and was issued with the
1D2N, 1Ds2 and 5D). I downloaded the 1D2 driver from Canon USA and deleted 1D2N, 1Ds2 and 5D drivers that came with software. I did not update any of the Canon Utilities to keep everything as plain as possible.

The computer made the acknowledgement sound and the icon appeared automatically in the camera and scanners window. When I clicked on the icon the dialogue box again said that "The computer cannot detect ... " I then went via All programmes to the Camera window only to be told "Cannot detect camera". I have rechecked the connection which must be ok as the 1D2 icon is there. Too much!!

I am obviously doing something basic wrong but ...

Done both 1D2 icon disappears and reappears automatically as soon as I turn on the camera. "Add device" icon says 1D2 already there.

Downloaded the 1D2 driver from Canon USA and deleted 1D2N, 1Ds2 and 5D drivers that came with software. Can't use USB has to be firewire.

Anything that you did differently?

Unfortunately, I never got it working under Vista, but if it's still not working under XP after going all the way back to the very root of your Canon installs, that points to some other kind of issue, like a damaged FW cable, or broken port on either the PC or camera end.

That, or there are some registry keys that just won't give up all the previous drivers that have been installed for the camera in the past. With an issue like this, I would normally swap to another PC to test with.

3 questions:

1) Why can't you use USB
2) Why uninstall other drivers if they were all in the same download/install
3) Does anything else work in Firewire port

I would reinstall new drivers from canon download, install them, and leave all that install alone.
