Those are good ideas to do with the cups if I take shots with someone like that again.
I mean, granted there was probably not going to be much to make things tons more flattering, but yeah, you could have done some things.

#1. Shoot more from the side rather than diagonally, using his body to block hers more.
#2. They were holding each other which always helps. Shooting from a higher vantage point also tends to be better.
#3. Could have had her right arm crossing her body and touching his arm or maybe shoot tighter and just get the upper body.
#4. Same thing as #3.

It's really not about the location (although it does help). You can take the couple out on the front porch and make some flattering photos. You just have to know how to use your surroundings to your advantage. Practice shooting in less than ideal locations. It will help you and make things tons easier when you do shoot in a great location.
