Until you need to be able to focus at the Canon's MFD of 1.2m.

I think the bokeh with the Nikon is a tad better. Or as they say "more creamy". Although, I have to shoot it more to see it for myself.

Yeah, the Canon def. has an edge at MFD.

there was actually no sunset since we were at the back of the island away from sunset...but they wanna do the shadow effect like this

The win for me goes to the Nikon 70-200 VR II. Why? Simply bcoz' of the tripod foot! Jk. They both perform identically and the only difference is MFD. Weight is not a big deal imo.

Actaully, it's so easy to change the mode on the Nikon. The Canon 5D III's dial is ugly.
I don't think canon is much prettier then nikon, but I do think the canon fits better in my little hands I found the d700 to be SO CLUNKY even my dad thought so when he got his last month.
