@ Inspeqtor : fortunate indeed - after I read this article from lensrentals.com, it was quite an eye opener and reminder that its not just a lens that could be front/back focusing but your camera body can be out a little as well.

Summarizing: if your camera body is "-1" and your lens is "+2" - that equals a soft image experience. If your lens is "+2" and your body is +1 or +2 - that equals a sharp combo. After reading the article, I learned its more accurate to say "My lens is really sharp! - on my body."

Thank you for this article. It sounds like I was very fortunate indeed in getting the right camera body to match my Sigma 150-500 lens! I have not yet fully tested my other lenses on the 60D. Hope I can say the same for the rest, but that would be wishful thinking after reading the article!

I wish Canon had continued the lens microcalibration feature with the 60D after having it in the 50D

I hear ya - I had the 50D and tested my current (at the time) lenses and they were all spot-on fortunately. My 60D and current lenses also seem sharp - lucky-boy me.

yet if the new 60D (70D, 60D MkII, whatever) has MA - I will get it... and, I get the upgrade bug and can't shake it until I get my fix

So staying on-topic - the 150-500 seems all the more a great candidate for my needs after seeing how sharp it 'can' be with the right body/lens combo... its always a lottery but MA levels the playing field. Cheers!

This is what I love about this lens. This is NOT cropped at all, 500mm. The bird was able to get close enough to fill the frame, without being so close that it was scared, or I was scared.

Admittedly this is a very big bird, but even a song bird at this range would still have left you with a very usable amount of image.

The obvious down side is that I was too close for the DOF I was using, and it caused the eyes to be in focus and the rest of the body was a little out.

awesome shoot. The DOF seems fine to me. For scientific research you want information. but for arts you just want it to look beautiful. It is beautiful

did you use extension tubes??

I think I have yet to get a macro that good with my L, although I have never used f/8...

This was taken through a double glazed window at about 200 yards. Just after the shot was taken, he jumped from the wall and caught a rabbit.

I have been playing with my new 7D, and starting to get the hang of shutter speeds and stuff, can you tell I'm a newbie?

But I think this lens is pretty sharp....
