Canon Speedlite EXII or....

I got a 430EXII for my birthday however wifey gave me the option to return it and go get a lens, Tamron 17-50 non -vc.

Question is do I keep the flash or go for the lens. Most of the pictures I take general, kids, vacations, car shows, etc. I have the 50 1.8 for portaits and the 55-250 for wildlife, aircraft photo's etc.

Keep the flash! No brainer.

Its funny, i posted the same question in the lens forum and I get the opposite answer.

Keep the flash, learn how to use it and it will make a bigger difference in your photos than any lens.

Gonzo and I have the exact same thoughts. The people in the lens forum are wrong.

Really though, here are my thoughts on which I base my advice. You have a lens in the same range as the Tamron. Its a nice lens, works fantastic outdoors but suffers indoors from its narrow aperture through the zoom range. Enter 430EXII. Now, you can shoot fill flash outdoors in high speed sync. YIPPEE filled in shadows. Now you can shoot at 1/200th of a second indoors AND at 5.6 at 50mm on your kit lens. YIPPEE! Now you can have directional lighting indoors instead of typical racoon eyes from overhead lights. YIPPEE!

Like I said, its a no brainer.
