Lil, if i may piggyback on this thread, because I am planning to upgrade to 7D in the next few weeks. For me it is a big jump because my current body is a rebel. There's lots of things to gain, based from what I have read so far. So thanks for creating this thread

Join in Jo, you know you are welcome. I've toyed with the idea before, but am hopelessly deadlocked at the moment. I'm hoping that someone will provoke a thought that will help me direct myself a little bit better than the total unknowing that I have now.

Thanks Lil, you are so kind. I read from somewhere that the 7D has the same processor wit the T1i (500D) and therefore the noise performance should be similar. Is there a website that compares the ISO performances of the different bodies?

I had a 50 d and jumped to a 7d. The 60 d was too close and I wanted something very fast. I like it very much, although it is a bit noisy. I still use the 50 d also. The 7d also takes great video! I like it a lot.

No problem Jo.
Here is a site, http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Ca..._results.shtml that does comparison. I cannot vouch for the veracity of the work because I'm such a novice, but it is a start.

Thank you very much Abby. Do you consider the 7D much different than the 50D? I have no interest in video, so that won't matter to me.

I've debated a long time about commenting here. I know less than most if not all of the previous posters about equipment, technology, technique, etc. but that being said and just speaking as the "common man"-OK-I wonder if you wouldn't be happier in the long run to wait until you could justify 1 of the higher end bodies. You do so extremely well w/ that 50D and, I think, are very dedicated to this hobby. Maybe the 7D would only be a "temporary fix" for you. I love my 7D and believe it suits my level of dedication well but afraid it may eventually fall short of yours. As humans, we tend to wonder what if...!
And as for the zooms, I'm in that camp. Your composition is always so outstanding and obviously important to you. To lose that leaf, twig, shadow, whatever because you couldn't include it in your image would be frustrating at times. We can crop but can't expand(Even I know that-lol).
Anyway, my 2 cents worth. Methinks you'll make the right decision. GOOD LUCK!

Thank you so very much for your considered response and very kind words Rog. May I sum it up with you have provided a great voice of reason? That and you sound just like my trusted guy at the camera shop.

I have to agree with what Rog suggested but not many people can take that plunge or are unsure if they need to...it's ultimately up to you to go in feet first.

I started out with a basic Rebel (350D) and the 70-200mm f/4L non-IS, upgraded my lens to the 400mm prime, upgraded to the 40D, upgraded to the 50D, upgraded my lens once again to the 500mm f/4L, upgraded to the 7D then finally upgraded to the 1D Mark IV.

Looking back now I should have went in feet first but many of us need to take baby steps to insure we want to do this and to justify how much $$$ we spend on gear. I never regretted a purchase because I learned a lot along the way which is why I do this as a hobby...a very expensive one as you well know.

I can't offer up much advice other than my personal experience so just follow your heart (and go with a pro camera body ). The last part is kind of a joke but not really.

Duane, you guys are all pretty darned alright! Thank you for taking the time to write a response. I go through this periodically after looking at the shutter actuations on the 50D. I just may never get rid of it and make the plunge to the pro camera body when the time is right to invest that much in the game.

Hi Diamond, sorry for delay. I do find it different than 50d. Having better ISO options, faster speed and better focusing options helps. My 7d makes my 50d seem slow However you got some good advice from ardeekay I think also. I'm often worried sometimes that I will outgrow it too soon but there isn't a lot out there that's much faster and for what there is there's a big price jump.

I think u will be happy with it. If all else fails and u outgrow it, you can sell it I suppose. But I really do like mine.

Abby, no problem whatsoever. I do long for better AF points than what the 50D has.
I will certainly keep your thoughts in mind as you have the same equipment. Thank you again.

I pulled the trigger! No time to do outdoor shooting, here's a sample tonight. ISO 1600, no noise reduction, cropped 50% and did generous sharpening (to expose the noise) and I am pretty impressed!

Very nice Jo! Congratulations on the new body.
That photo bodes well for what is to come outside. I cannot wait to see what you come up with.
Enjoy!
