Default Need help with lighting

ok here is my issue.....i have an alien bee 1600 & a 50d along with expo disk & light meter.......how can i use all of these to get optimal results.........indoors & out?

Have any modifiers for the AB1600? If not, that would be a start.

Oh boy, thats a long answer. Can you give use a starting point for each situation? Meaning, if you were going to setup a shot indoor, at what point do you not know what to do? Same for outdoor.

So I pull my camera and flash out and turn them both on...

basically i have no modifiers except a 22 inch bd i think with a sock...........i want to do outdoor shots but i have been asked to do indoor portraits & photos of kids,mock set ups ...ect. i want to be able to set up in any situation & know that my photos will be up to par.........i also have a 5 in one reflector

A beauty dish, while a great modifier, isnt going to cover all situations. Am umbrella or soft box would give you more options. Since you only have one light, a reflector is a must.

After watching Zack Arias' One Light DVD, I don't really agree with the last statement about the reflector being a must... but nice to have, sure!
