I don't think the 600 has a optical trigger. 600 only has radio IIRC

I cannot answer your question, but I was going to ask a similar question, and thought I'd ask here rather than create a new thread. I hope you don't mind, and hopefully we both get the answers we are after.

My question is the same, but I have a Nissin Di622 mk II in place of your 430.

I just received my 600EX-RT and have had a quick play on my 5D3. Can't wait to check out all the options.

But I wanna know what my options are as far as having a dual flash setup are, until I can afford a second 600.

I currently have a Nissin Di622 mk II and 2x Cactus V5 triggers.

Is there any way to get both flashes to fire together? I don't need HSS or ETTL for the type of work I will be doing, manual will be fine. I haven't used ETTL on my Nissin off-camera ever, so I don't need it.

I want to do some product shots, and would like to be able to use the 600 along with my regular Di622/Cactus setup.

Can I get the 600 to fire optically from the Nissin? From what I gather, this isn't possible.

What are my options? Can I get an ETTL cable to fire the 600EX and set the Nissin to slave? Would this work?

Ideally I'd buy a second 600 and get it to fire one 600 and use the Nissin as an optic slave. Or even better, buy a ST-E3 and have 2x 600's wireless. But before I can spend more $$ I wonder what my options are with my current setup?

600EX-RT is both optical and radio slavable. However the 420EX cannot act as a master flash, therefore it cannot trigger the 600EX-RT. Something like the 580EX or 580EX II can (or the pop flash on many newer Canon DSLR's)

I am not familiar with the 420EX, but based on Canon's model number convention, I assume that the 420 cannot be set as a master. If that is indeed the case, then you wouldn't be able to use Canon's optical system to trigger the 600. Like other Canon speedlites, I don't believe the 600 has a optical slave built in (not a dumb one anyway)... but it does have a sync port where you could add one.

I believe you should be able to use Canon's optical wireless system to trigger the 420EX (slave) with the 600EX-RT (master).

As someone has stated above already, the 600EX-RT can operate in both optical and radio. Unfortunately, in your situation, the 420EX can not be a master. Why not use the 420EX as a slave?

For the record, I worked out that I can fire the 600EX with my Cactus V5 triggers on my 5DIII, and the Di622 fires optically in sync.
