I'm figuring:

- Hi-res body
- Entry level full-frame
- 7D2
- 70D

I have no idea how likely it is but that would mean the entire DSLR range got upgraded this year wouldn't it?

I'd be surprised they wouldn't just keep the 5D2 in the lineup as the "entry level full-frame" and then add the 70D, 7D2, and 3D (or whatever it'd be called).

Have you seen the rumoured specs of the D600?

24MP, weather-sealed, 100% viewfinder, 39 AF points, inbuilt AF motor, same ISO range as the 5D2, possibly inbuilt GPS, possibly as low as $1500, almost certainly no pattern noise in shadows.

How the 4-year-old 5D2 is supposed to compete, I don't know.

I agree - there is a big hole in both Nikon and Canon $2,000 FF neighborhood. 5dii has very old feature set, d700 just isn't it either. If I were an exec in either company I would have to be planning that the other guy is going to fill the hole....

The effective price drops on the 7d and 60d w/ the double rebates on the lens packages sends a pretty darn strong signal. I suspect both are going to come out with a new "high performance" crop sensor - 1dx is for the nails for b-fast guys, those with a little softer b-fast wouldn't mind a crop sensor with features near the 1dx, etc. (if you are really in deep, the 1dx only costs $5/day over the 5diii over two years - lay off the starbucks and it is equal :) )

Lastly, both Nikon and Canon have product road maps going out several years. Hardware gains (cost/quality/function) are reasonably predictable, software likewise for the most part - some of the "edges" and hardware/software combos are hard to predict. Is it the new sensor or new software - better data paths or better software the moves the data, some combination thereof, etc.

If you see me with a wrench - call 911. 5d3, T3i, 17-55 2.8, 50 1.8, 70-200 2.8 L II, 24-105 f4. YN 565, Precision Lupe attached to hacked extended eyecup (no sticky frame) - old enough to have owned an original F-1

That's a good point....these days Nikon is pushing Canon a lot on body updates.

I doubt this really means 4 additional new DSLR bodies to the ones we already know about. 4 bodies this year seems more sensible - 1Dx, 5DIII, 650D, 70D.

Any more at a time when you have austerity/unemployment/people not spending money across a large portion of the consumer base seems like bad business to me.

5D3, 50/1.4, 40/2.8, 24-105L, 100L, 70-200L II, 400/5.6L, 600EX-RT, Zuiko 28/2.8, flickrexternal link

If they make a 7d2 that's a cheap ff with decent af I better get rid of my backup 5d2.

If this thing gets released for cheap to compete with the rumored d600, the 5d2 will be worth under a thousand and 5d classics will be worth a couple hundred bucks

Given that Canon effectively has a $9000 hole in their birding lens lineup (400 f/5.6 for $1500 to 500L IS II for $10500), and show no indication of ever even considering trying to fill it..... I wouldn't put much stake in their exec's ability to spot a hole that needs filling. ;)

Canon does not keep replaced bodies in production. It may still be on canoneos.com for now but that's just a reference point for resellers to sell remaining stock.

I very doubt this would happen. I don't think Canon has ever released 4 new DSLR cameras at once.

the 5Dmk2 has been replaced by the 5dmk3. to simply say that they are going to use this as a cheaper FF camera doesn't sound right. the camera is old compared by today's standards. there may be a cheaper FF coming but it will be a new camera designed from new. it may have or may not have a new naming convention.

Another mirror less camera, well they might, but they have just released their first one and I don't think they would release another one just yet. Perhaps at the start of the year but just not yet.

As for Pro bodys. the 1Dx is just hitting shelves now so I think will wait a little while to release something new on that line.
