I downloaded this new program on my new MacBook Pro. It's called color splash studio and it lets you selectively color images. Here are just a few I have done so far.

Oh boy......selective color!
I'm sorry but I just cringe at that any more. I mean no offense but it's just so first-day-with-a-camera kind of thing.

I am never a fan of selective coloring... I would rather buy a soda with that dollar!

Usually I have the same cringe response to selective colouring as saea501, but I have to say I think that shot of the sneakers really works.

I generally agree, with about two conditions... 1) selective toning, where the overall presentation is sort of "black and white", but with subtle hints of color being added to certain areas. That can work. 2) The use of selective color in the TC's photos is fairly inoffensive. Take the first photo, for example. The focus is on the apples, the apples are all ENTIRELY in color, and the apples would be completely dominating the image regardless. The lack of color in the surrounding area isn't really distracting, because the black and white areas are insignificant enough that I keep my eye on the apples so long as the apples are dominating the image. I can't say that this photo works BETTER with or without selective coloring, but I can't say that not using selective color would make it better or worse. There are problems I have with the image, but none of them have to do with part of the image being in color and part being in b&w. Show me a comparison and I'll say which image works better, but I'm not going to make an assumption without seeing a comparison. I have problems with the image as it stands, but color really isn't one of those problems. |

The problem is, there are VERY few shots in which selective color improves the image (or just plain works). If it works, then do it. But from what I've seen, it usually doesn't work. |
