So one of our least used lenses is the 50L. With our style we generally like to stand further away and use the 85 or the 70-200. If we need a wider shot we'll go with the 35L.
Also, when editing we ALMOST always prefer the look of my 5D2 to my wifes 7D when comparing them side-by-side. We also shoot weddings together and use each other as our backups. 2 people, one body each, so I think we need a 3rd body. What are your thoughts on this switch: Sell: 7D and 50L Buy: Used 5d2, used 40D, new 50 1.4 It would have VERY little impact as far as cash in or out, so I think it would be a good trade. Thoughts?

I say go for it. You will be both using a 5DII which you prefer and the 40D will (hopefully) get rarely used only when a 5DII fails. The only downside is losing the 7D's better AF but you already own a 5DII and know its limitations.

Looks good to me, if your not using the 50 1.2, much, the 50 1.4 is going to do everything you need as well sounds like.

If you don't often use the 50mm focal length, why get another one? Get a second 85 1.8 (they're inexpensive enough) so you both have access to that prime, or get something new and completely different like a 14mm.

I don't know, I feel like as a wedding photographer you never know when you might need that focal length so I feel like having a gap between 35-70 might worry me. I don't see much benefit of us both using the 85 1.8 instead of one using it and the other using the 70-200 at 2.8. I'm not sure the need would ever arise for that. I don't do much wide stuff so a 14mm doesnt appeal much to me. That is a good thought though about getting something other than a 50 that might give me something different...hmm.

I definitely recommend shooting with dual full frame setups if at all possible; it's how my wife and I work, and we have a crop backup. It gives you a much more consistent look.
