I usually shoot Evaluative. I also keep a close eye on the ISO so I'm not needlessly using a high ISO value.

Canon must be thinking exposure compensation adjustment is necessary. They provide it on their ELPH series.

I shoot at -2/3 with my S1 IS, G10 and, sometimes my 30D. I guess that the bias toward slight overexposure is just Canon's way and something we user need to look out for. I also suspect that the great majority of users wouldn't even notice.

talking to friends and family who do not care about how a camera or photography works, they prefer the "bright" photos more.

I have had Fuji, Panosonic, and now Canon. All the cameras I have had, benefited from some exposure compensation. All small camera sensors 1/2.3, are subject to narrow minded dynamic range. And will blow highlights in high contrast lighting, such as full sunlight during the mid part of the day.

This is just a fact with the small sensor cameras, and has nothing to do with who made them. Your best images with the cameras, will be on overcast days. And that's - just another fact!.

You are right 100% here. Most small sensor cameras, are bought by people who think cell phone cameras are the greatest.

The problem is that it makes shooting in auto mode pretty much useless. I usually shoot in P mode but newbies shoot in auto.

Newbies also don't know what a well exposed photo looks like. If you peruse the threads where people are posting their best examples with their cameras you can witness this.
