I'm a newbie, a new owner of a G12, but my cat knocked it off the kitchen bench. Since then it hasn't worked at all. I've recharged the battery but no luck. Has anyone else had the same experience? I'm wondering just how tough this unit is, 'tho I'm a pretty careful user.

Apparently not very tough but I don't think any camera would survive that.

I do not know many cameras that survive a hit on a tile or linoleum floor. I think your expectations are a little high in this instance and "careful user" cannot prevent all accidents. I doubt any DSLR would survive that kind of fall. Anyway, I am sorry for your loss GilBean |

I guess you're right, not many cameras are that tough, except the specialists.
I have learned my lesson- no more cats! (and take more care with my gear...) Thanks for your responses! |

My cat knocked a 50D with a 300mm f 2.8 lens off the dining room table a few years back. The camera and lens hood hit first on carpeting and miraculously nothing was broken. I kept the cat but from that point on was pretty careful about where I left my gear.

Cameras are generally considered delicate precision instruments, not something you'd routinely bang around.
There are some cameras out there that can handle the kind of abuse that the OP inadvertently subjected his too, but those cameras generally have few if any moving parts. There are some that are Crush Proof / Drop Proof / Water Proof / Freeze Proof and for what they are they do a darn good job. I have an Olympus that is like that, it stays in the saddle bag on my motorcycle. |

I've dropped my G9 and G11 a few times, but they were usually in a small case that provided some protection. I wear a wrist strap with my cameras to avoid the camera slipping from my hands. I had my A620 fall about two to three feet on to carpet (laid over concrete), and it broke the corner plastic battery door. The camera still worked, but I had to hold the door shut manually. I eventually sent it in for a $100 repair, and am still using it.
I found a thread about the durability of the G series and the damages from dropping. It suggests the lens may be the issue. So, it might depend on what was damaged by the drop. The lens is the most delicate, so see if the lens blades are bent, dented, or damaged any way. It may be be costly to repair, but you would have to ask Canon, or which ever service you use. http://photo.net/canon-eos-digital-camera-forum/00YPlg Dennis |

I hope you get the camera going ok again and also that the cat lives to tell the tale, and keeps hers... (tail) not a cat's fault, but last year when I was rushing through a very busy street in the centre of the city on the way to catch a train, I had my G12 in a Lowepro small bag . the one tight enough to completely surround the G12. with the bag strap strung across from one shoulder, across chest with the bag hanging down on my other side . always safe and sound from muggings that way. ( no pun intended re the cat) but a cataclysm happened ( my fault completely) another person in the crowd coming opposite, who seemly was doing the same kindof speeding that I was ... disaster: the strap which was hanging out of my little bag caught something hanging out of them, (don't ask, I didn't..we were like ships in the night anyway) and in a flash ( pun not intended again ) I felt a strong chuck (hope nobody here named chuck) and heard the thud all in a split second . the little G12 had been whipped out of its safe space, it was a tight space but the chuck of whatever it was from the other person's thing had caught the zips little catch and pulled it so fast and furious it yanked and forced the zip to completely open all the way around , the bag was sideways then , enough for the G12 to fly and hit the ground so hard the speed and the bang was horrific to feel and hear. I mean... a camera ..hitting the ground of solid cement ! I thought that has to be the end. heard sorry from someone whizzing by and looked down to see the little black box waiting , lying on its back I thought it was dead. I nearly died, but very thankfully.. it didn't. its doing fine and has been since I can vouch for it getting that huge bang on the concrete maybe your G12 got shuck a little and just needs a check up to sort out whatever hopefully that is all . I guess it all depends on what delicate part may have got hit.but I sincerely hope its alright. Welcome to the forum
