Don't bother. Go and enjoy the race. Its hard enough to shoot from in front of the fence at Silly (my local track) let alone behind it!

Best place to go at Silverstone with your 50-250 would be between Vale and Club Corner there is a raised area there. Also you could get some shots round at Woodcote, really does depend when your there if it's only raceday it will be heaving but if you are going Friday and Saturday should be able to move around a bit.

The big problem at Silverstone is the distance the spectator is from the track. They seem to have heeded the wisdom that motor racing is dangerous and kept us from what we came to see.
Compare that to a track like Spa, where the photographic possibilities are endless. Even Monaco. I have been leaning on the armco as the F1 cars were about 6" the other side as they moved to the outside of turn 1. Its a shame Silverstone is so bad. Well... never been to Silverstone.
But stay on Stowe. Hopefully, you'll see MSC crash and break his legs again. ![]()

I've never been to Silverstone either. I was going to take my 5d and 70-200 but maybe I shouldn't bother...
What do you reckon?

200mm is never going to be powerful enough for Silverstone.

The closest you'll get will be at luffield, but this area tends to be for silver and gold ticket holders.
Ive been before and I was shooting at about 300mm the majority of the time. Your best bet is hiring out a lens if you have the funds, try hireacamera.com . I've gone for a sigma 100-300 with a 1.4 converter, which hopefully do the job! |

I tend to use a 100-400L with a 1.4x convertor, which gives me 560mm and I find at Silverstone its not enough. Compare that to Donnington where I rented a 500mm prime which proved an excellent choice for that track.
The problem with Silverstone is that they have taken safety too seriously, the viewing areas are waaaay to far from the action. |

To update this I found 400 mm too long at times, and reverted back to just the native 70-200

You must have been very close to the track, far closer than I have ever managed. Care to share a few?
