#1: I want to see it all sharp. Might try to reduce the black reflection in the top of the buckle, too.
#2: Again, sharpness. I want the foreground pearls sharp. I wouldn't mind if the ones in the far background went a little soft.

#1 is pretty busy. I like #2. What's going on in the back of the bracelet is confusing to me. Maybe if it was sharper. Good job keeping the background white.

On the first shot the idea was the concept not the execution...I didn't post the point of that shot my fault I could have added a link to a few shots of what that was...it was me working on some DIY tools for other pieces I was shooting for s client. I agree that the background is really busy. I really intended to use either a pea-gravel or some sand but was too lazy to trudge to the garage and root around for it. The result was mostly due to not being able to open larger than 2.8 and a very short subject to background distance...plus it was fun shooting that tacky ring...hahahaha...subject isolation just wasn't possible for my setup. Of course I was using a 35mm 1:1 macro, the DA 35/2.8 Limited. That alone makes for a challenge shooting small items at near macro distances...the lens is not 1:1 until about a working distance from the front element of about 0.75" to 1", but for small to medium pieces it's a gem of a lens. Now onto the whites...not close to as blown as I wanted. Problem was too much wrap-around on the item(s) themselves. That is simply due to the subject resting directly upon the background. So I sorta had to settle for something close to OK. Since I've spent time refining a solution to give the results needed for client's product catalogs while retaining the detail level in the items and minimal editing time for nothing more than a WB and crop most times. A nice preset in LR usually does the trick now...for white background shots anyway...heh... I did a better job on this shot here: ![]() ![]() FYI, used the same 35/2.8 macro lens as in the first shot. It really is my go-to lens for product shots. Though my 43/1.8 is no slouch either. Different technique which totally eliminates the chance of light wrap-around. That allows you to blow out the background to your hearts content...well, within reason anyway.

I put one softbox in the front left of the planes, about 1-2 feet above the planes. And a flash with snoot shoot at the black background to create the spot light.
Not sure if I put a 2nd softbox on the right side of the plane to fill the tail. It was a while ago. |
