Default RED on the street

This might be of interest to gearheads. An actual RED camera in use.

The operator was following a U.S. Senate candidate as he campaigned at a parade.

Those are awesome but I must say, what a wierd choice of camera for a US Senate candidate campaigning. We use these and Alexas regularly on our film sets, not really a TV camera.

Yeah well, there is a good chance that this guy might not know what he is doing considering he didn't even bother weighting the rear of the rig in order to off-set the front. Either that or he is WAY stronger than he looks. A fully equiped Scarlet-X is pretty heavy.

Yea weird choice of setup...

RED camera, Redrock Micro mattebox and Red People operating it! lol Im seeing a growing theme here.

That being said what a terrible shoulder rig! They couldnt have sprung for the rest of the shoulder rig from Redrock Micro? Man does that setup look uncomfortable!

I've never shot video and don't ever see myself doing it but the first thing that came to mind when I saw this was "where's the counterweight?".

I know it's hot out and all but wouldn't something like a Glidecam X10 kit be a better choice for following someone around? I imagine somebody rents them out if you don't want to purchase one.

I wondered that as well for choosing that improperly rigged camera for what is essentially an ENG assignment.

I have followed many a politician with a camcorder and I can assure you the footage one gets might be suitable for making a documentary on bullcrap, but not much more.

And maybe the guy being videoed is a Republican campaigning in a “red” state.

lol ok. clearly i was kidding and you missed it.

if hes shooting for TV all he needs is a decent 2/3incher anyway. if hes shooting a documentary still doesnt need a red. everyone agrees its overkill.

as much as a documentary on politics is nothing more than bullcrap you cant deny how many dumb people will waste money on it. therefore its profitable crap

also photo #2 is the face you make when you realize you forgot the counterweight for your shoulder rig

I don't get it... it's not like they aren't used every day?!?! What's so weird about seeing one being used?

It's not only about what you use; but how you use it as well. With any camera that doesn't look like this-

You need to configure it so that it at least resembles one, if you intend to hand-hold it while shooting.

You can comfortably hold a camera, like the one pictured, on your shoulder for extended periods of time, with the added bonuses of:
- Deeper DoF for easier focusing.
- Huge zoom range.
- Long recording times.
- High quality 4ch audio recoding.
- Waveform and vector scope without the need of an external monitor.

And the final system price ends up being fairly similar, the camera pictured above will run you about $33,000 minimum, which isn't out of line with a Scarlet in the configuration posted by the OP.

Horses for courses I say... the Scarlet can do 4K, slo-mo, RAW, and so on, but it has to be used rather methodically. The HPX3100 pictured will only render a 1080p image at standard frame rates, but it will do so perfectly and you don't need to reconfigure it when the shooting situation changes.

Oh I understand that, a substantial quantity of the work I do is politics or political in nature.

Never had a need to make a face like that as I utilize a camcorder that can be carried all day long with very little stress, physical stress that is.

I do like shot three though, it's reassuring to know if one spends all that money on a rig like that the viewfinder can double as a head scratcher.
