the 50mm 1.8 also had a 52mm thread so no reason it shouldn't work, but why would you want such a large hood on a small lens?

The hood is designed for full frame, right?

It's a 50mm hood on a 40x1.6 FOV 35 equiv....you might get some vignetting.

Wait, I think I got that backwards... You're using a shorter designed hood on a longer (equiv) lens. It should be fine.

But yeah, I concur, I wouldn't bother with a hood. I normally use them for protection, and if it,s threaded to the shifting barrel, I'd worry that knocks to the hood will budge the lens mechanism.

Got mine just in time for a trip to Tahoe. Loved the compact nature when walking around with the family. Used a small, repurposed GPS bag to keep the 40/40 (40D/40mm) in the diaper bag and the pics are more than suitable for my needs.

Great review on the digital picture, amazing difference in corner sharpness between the 40 and the 35/50!!

The only thing I have to ever so slightly disagree with...is his take on the AF motor's sound. I agree with him that Canon's claims of this lens being completely silent on the T4 are a little too optimistic, but for day-to-day shooting, I've NEVER heard my little 40 make a sound. If you're alone in a soundproof room, probably...but generally I consider this lens a "silent" focuser in the real world (of course, that doesn't mean it'll be silent on video).

I sort of agree with you about the noise. The only time I really hear it is when doing MF, which I tend to do slower than the AF works.
Saying that, most of my shots are outdoors so I wouldn't hear it anyway.

Here are some shots... Surprisingly, the bokeh is great and somehow different than what a 50mm produces at f/2.8 when framed in tight

I think that is what he was mentioning is that you will hear it in video. Regardless, 'much-less' noise than the 50 is a very good thing :-)
