Default Snoot for a 60D + 100L + 580exII

I've made my share of snoots in the past and thought I should probably share one of my more recent ones. I made this for a friend who was just starting out in macro, I thought it provided good light.

In light green here I've roughly drawn a 60D with a 580exII flash fitted on the camera and a 100L lens. I've shown the lens hood as a dashed 2d shape. The snoot is shown purple and is made from a cardboard that is white on one side and silver on the other. Big sheets are available very cheaply here at newsagents. I put the silver reflective side on the inside of the snoot.

Once I was happy with the shape of the snoot I worked out what the flat shapes should look like so I could cut them out of A3 sheets. I've allowed a 10mm overlap for folding/joining the edges. This is what the sides look like, remembering that the reflective face needs to be on the near side for one and the far side for the other ...

This is the top and bottom shapes ....

And this is the diffusion surface shape. For this one I made it out of vellum paper, it may have been 2 layers or 1. The curved lines represent the edge of the top and bottom of the snoot, I left room outside these curves for some overlap and folding when I cut it out.

Here is a sample picture from the first subject found after it was fitted, of course showing the all important catchlights in the eyes.

In more recent ones for other friends I have added a modelling light which is just a small LED light that I fitted on the underside of the snoot. Just enough light to aid focusing in low light areas.

Here is a link to the same spider shot with a 5DII, MP-E and MT24ex with a concave diffuser, I've tweaked my concave diffuser since then ....

Nice! Same principle as what I posted here 3 weeks ago. http://photography-on-the.net/forum/....php?t=1195643

Just curious bot would it be easier to remote trigger the flash? Either way this is really cool so thanks for sharing.

thats cool. I got this 3m reflective tape from wallmart the other day that would probably work good on the inside of one of those snoots

I was going to post this in your thread as it was quite similar. I believe this is easier as no brackets or chords are used.

I don't see how it could be easier, this is a pretty simple setup.

That would work, before I found this cardboard that had a silver side I used to glue alfoil to the inside of the snoot. This silver cardboard just simplifies it even more ....

You could have posted it there.......Yeah some don't have brackets and cords and with the economy the way it is now, we all need all the DIY shortcuts we can find. This is the good thing about the forum, ideas can be gathered and different styles can be designed/built and maybe all can benefit from it photography wise.

Depends on what kind of reflective tape it is. The reflective tape you would use to make things more visible at night probably would not be a good idea. That type of reflector is designed to send light back in roughly the same direction it hit the tape from. So, essentially it would just reflect most of the light back in to your flash.

The other type of reflective tape, having a mirror like surface, is what you'd want.

The "night" reflective tape if placed inside the diffuser on all interior surfaces (which would be at different angles, due to the design) in thinking, should bounce the light "all around"...it will need to be tested and tweaked, and it may work and may not work...in theory it should..but hey that's how we learn..It's not about the fall, it's how you get up.

Very nice Brian. Do you have any photos showing the actual diffuser on your camera and lens?

I made this one for a friend and I don't think I have any pictures of it, I have been playing around with a new one for the Sigma 150 macro lens, I'll photograph that one when it's working well ... it maybe a little different to this one shape wise.
