Default 3 songs and out 3 mins 42 secs

Yep. That's what 3 songs clocked in at yesterdays CBGB Festival Guided By Voices show at Summerstage in Cenral Park. I felt sorry for the togs who got to the pit late.

That just shows how badly designed the 3songs rule is. At a Metallica show 3 songs could add up to 20 minutes. At a punk show it can be 2 minutes.

At some shows its 1 or 2. Most is 3 songs.

There were some that I did this year where I was allowed the whole set, so you get some gems in doing this. In the 3 songs rule, I don't mind it at all because it keeps me on my toes to get things right during the grace period. I agree that 2 mins may not be enough for most togs, and I am not saying that it is right.

I shot Styx and Yes once and had no idea the 2nd song ended and the 3rd began. The security guard had to flag me down.

according to the duration of the studio tracks ("Laundry and Lasers," "The Head," "Roll of the Dice, Kick in the Head"), you got screwed by about a minute. maybe Bob had the rock machine revved up high right out of the gate.

but yeah, i've shot GBV 3 times, with one of those times under the 3 song rule and got a healthy 7 minutes out of it

i've also had time limits instead of songs...Roadburn had 3 songs or 10 minutes, whichever came first. Yes had us shoot only the first song (Siberian Kaatru) which was about 9 minutes.

Just to be clear, I had plenty of time to get everything I needed to get in the allotted time. While I enjoy less restriction, I have no problems with a 3 song limit, or any other time limit. If I can't get good shots in the allotted time, I should find another line of business...that's what I'm being paid to do.

And yes, narlus, they came out of the gate already in overdrive.

I dunno, but I still like the 3 songs rule. With DJs sets, you're allowed up to 20minutes with no gaps. Though not being allowed on the stage to get good shots is just a waste of time

I loved shooting ZZTop - they forgot to tell us we were supposed to shoot songs 4 and 5, till the end of song 2
So we got to shoot songs 1,2,4 and 5

3 mins 42 secs is a pretty short set of songs to shoot, although we only got 1 song when I shot Miley Cyrus, that would have been less than 3 mins

And at the sound desk, because she doesn't want any close ups on her

That was the nice thing about the Grateful Dead. Three songs could be an hour and a half.

Nope - we were in the pit, same as Justin Beiber, ACDC, ZZ Top and Pearl Jam.
The only artists I have had to shoot from the sound desk are Tina Arena and Tim Minchin
