I am an active member in the compact forum and have been venturing over to G land forums. I am extremley intrigued by the G1x and it capabilities. For me the size is perfect and everything is just about right interms of specs. My question is to those who have an s95 or s100 like I do, when you purchased and began to shoot with the G1x, did you immediatly notice a dramatic leap in IQ?
I mainly shoot landscapes and architecture but would love to shoot portraits as well. Static subjects 99 percent of the time. Do you.notice a sizable jump interms of resolution, cropping ability and DR plus being able to push and pull highlights and shadows in PP? I.am almost ready to pull the trigger, just need some thoughts. Thanks in advance.. Mike |

I have a Ricoh GRD3 which I understand has the same sensor as the S95. I still use the GRD for macro and ultra portability but the IQ of the G1X blows the Ricoh out of the water, completely and utterly, I still gasp at the IQ that the G1X produces every time I load some files into Lightroom. It's amazing!

@ Chris >>> It is pretty outstanding what Canon has released in this camera as per the IQ of it.

I have both for now, I'll be selling the S100 shortly because it appears my wife is actually using the G1X (she preferred the S100 to the T3i). I didn't think she would want to carry the G1X around since she was used to the pocketability of the S100 but she likes the "flippy screen".
As for IQ, in short yes I did notice a difference in detail. I too am amazed when I load these pictures into LR from the G1X. I think the S100 takes very good pictures and I've seen some of your posts that prove that. But the detail in the G1X is definitely better. As for cropping, I did a sample test of JPEG's from the G1X, the 17-55, the 24-105L and the 50 1.4 mounted on the T3i cropped to 100%. It just blows me away that the G1X looked better to me than all of those lenses. My brother-in-law agreed but thought that the 50 1.4 was very close. He also has a T3i, we are not pros, just hobbyists in non lab settings. As for tweaking in post, I never did much of that with the S100, we usually just left it in "P" mode JPEG and used it for quick snaps/candids. I can't push the G1X Raw files as far as the T3i but that's probably due to user error more than anything. But I find shooting JPEG is yielding excellent results. |

If you are shooting mostly landscape and architecture the G1x is perfect as it records a remarkable amount of detail.

That G really is hard to find. I guess living in places like New York, London and Singapore come in handy when technology is released. Atlanta definitely is not near the top when it comes to shipping new releases.

Good morning. Now that a few months have passed, I wonder what the thoughts are, now?
I have an S90 and I tend to upgrade every few years which means I'm overdue. My mainstay is my 7D but I'd love to have something pocketable with better range and IQ than the S90. The S90 is a good compact camera but it definitely has limitations.
