Default Yosemite

Finally made it to Yosemite. Was a bit of a awkward trip. I arrived around 1:00 and traffic in the valley was crazy. I tried to scope out a few places for later in the day but by the time the light started getting better, I was exhausted from being up since 4am that morning. I didn't end up leaving the park until about 9:30 so it was a LONG day. I was trying to get in as many spots as I could so inevitably I didn't hit the right light in certain spots.

Would love some criticism, I know this isn't my best stuff, but I tried to make the best of it despite being really drained from the drive/heat/crowds.

A nice series Ty, I like the Half Dome shot. You encountered what a lot of people do in Yosemite, overexposure. The dark foreground make the skies and mtn tops overexposed. It took me forever to figure this out. Now I shoot those shots -2/3 or -1 stops below normal or I bracket my shots and blend them.

Thanks for sharing. And July is not the time to go to Yosemite unless it's the high country. Any sunset shots?

I'm going to agree with Dave, most are over exposed. I really like the comp on #2, just wish it wasn't so overexposed. If you shot in RAW, you might be able to recover some of the sky and blend them in PS.

Thanks Rick, I was happy with the color on those.

No sunset shots. I did bracket many of those shots. And even with Photomattix, they still come out overexposed or overcooked. I think it was just wrong time of the day to attempt the reflection shots. Like you said, just too much range between the dark shadows on the floor and the sun hitting the mountains. I didn't want to leave and not get the shots, but I knew it was going to be very tough. I was driving around trying to hit as many spots as possibly so while doing that, I missed being able to camp out at just one spot and wait for the best light. I also stupidly forgot my GNDs, so that was a big downer.

I'm going to dig out my Kelby books and see what I can do with some layer masks, but I think they sky is just going to be too bright. Thanks for the comments.

Shots 2 and 3 really stand out to me because of the beautiful reflections in the water. Overexposed skies immediately disappeared once I mentally dove into the water.

Ty try Oloeno Photoengine, does a much more natural looking HDR than Photomatix. It's only downfall is alignment, but I do that in Photomatix, save as a .HDR file then open in Photoengine. Email a series and I can show you and example of it. PM me.

I think #1 is the best of the bunch, the rest are overexposed. Where did you shoot #1 from? The angle doesn't look right for Glacier Point...

#1 is from Glacier point right from the rocks at the end of the walkway with the railings. Perspective might be off since I was using a 70-200.

That's why I couldn't figure out where else it could have been! Thanks!

Nice series!

I like #1 and #5. I feel you on the harsh light. I was there a week and a half ago and I struggled with the same thing.
