I've been using the SX110IS for work for the last week or so while trying to decide what camera I want to go with permanently and I've been impressed with the outcome. The images tend to look horrible on the screen but once they are uploaded they come out very sharp. I know the images aren't the most interesting to look at but the sharpness and the color seemed really good to me for a camera I think I paid $129 for and didn't intend to use very long.

I've installed the CHDK (Canon Hack Development Kit) for my SX110 and it had a good many features you can enable.
I specifically have enabled the "battery power remaining" on my LCD because the regular Canon indicator is substandard and essentially the only time we see the battery power is "when there is only about 5 minutes of power left" and That is not convenient... I have also enabled the RAW feature - specifically to shoot DNG (Digital NeGative developed by Adobe [I think], akin to PDF) - which is quite widely known and widely supported in Photo Editing software. DNG gives you more editing power with your photos and then you can convert them to jpeg. Typical DNG files are about 14mb so a faster SD card will quicken the transfer. I'm still reading and learning and fiddling around. I'll be happy to share what I have learned with anyone and eventually someone may in turn help me. Its highly customization or you can ignore most features. I've been going through and learning every menu feature here: http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__...tart_Guide.pdf

I got this camera before my DSLRs and I have printed 'many' 11x14" cropped prints with it.
The only real issue I have had is - somehow a brown greese got into the extending lens barrels and at one point it gave lens errors and would not remain open, so it closed. I was able to get a business card in the lens barrels and it soaked up the greese/oil and it works well again. No regrets getting this camera. But being a DSLR photographer now, I wish the SX110 had a viewfinder. When this camera dies or maybe before - I will get the new Canon G1X or its successor, or S100 or successor (both lines use RAW), mainly for landscape/portability.

Just realized I actually have a sx120is instead of a 110. I got it a long time ago and just never got around to actually using it.
Took these at a concert a few nights ago. They're pretty noisy but considering we were about 5 rows back on a top balcony and the entire building was really dark I think they came out really well for such a budget camera: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() They pretty much have me settled on a SX150IS as soon as this one bites the dust which I'm guessing won't be much longer considering how much it's put to use. The band was Third Day if anyone was wondering. Last edited by ib2loud : 30th of March 2012 (Fri) at 21:35. |

Using CHDK with my sx110 - converted to DNG in camera and imported to Lightroom 4.
Decreased highlights for background building detail, etc, and filled shadow details mainly on the camera body. The ability to use DNG in the sx110 and using Lightroom really helped this photo out, I thought

Anybody wish to compare the SX120 to the SX150? Is it any better or worse?

I checked out the specs and I sell the sx150 at the store I work in... I love my sx110 but I will be upgrading out of the sx line. The sx150's 14 megapixels turned me right off... although if I understand math correctly in the link below - the 150's sensor is a touch larger...
http://www.dpreview.com/products/com...tDir=ascending EDIT: actually - I see the sx130 got a sensor size upgrade over the sx120 - so in my mind the sx130 looks more attractive than the sx150 (12mp vs 14mp) http://www.dpreview.com/products/com...tDir=ascending EDIT 2: turns out the sx120's sensor went 'smaller' than the sx110, then went to regular size with the sx130/150

as inexpensive as this camers is, (sx 100is) once you get the timing down, it is possible to get some good shots even when objects are in motion.
this is single shot mode too I don't know what inspired my to carry this camera around, but I ended up taking a ton of shots with it. PLM 2012 |

I love the versatility of the SX110is and I take it everywhere with me. Here are a couple of shots of Niagara Falls at Night. These photos were hand held at 800 ISO and ½ sec exposure. Image stabilization is great on the SX110.

Maybe a mod should add SX130 (and maybe 140 and 150) to the title
From last summer, with my sx130 ![]()
